On Drumming
Paradiddles I learned how to play the drums when I was 13 through this book, Realistic Rock Drum Method byCarmine Appice. I didn’t know who he was and I remember wondering why he was wearing eyeliner.  But I’ll be damned if he didn’t know how to write a good instructional drum book.  I also had a drum instructor who taught me first how to play along with “Eye of the...

Thoughts on Jesus' Son
Read Denis Johnson’s Jesus’ Son this week, and was - and becoming even more - blown away. The stories are entertaining yet complex. I finished the book last night and today while I was thinking about something totally unrelated, one of the stories hit me viscerally - as if it was the residue from some vivid dream I had had where before your mind even has a chance to fill in the...

Thoughts on Night of the Hunter
The Night of the Hunter I was a little disappointed with this film. Although I enjoyed its angular cinematography (apparently influenced by German expressionism, I read) and could recognize James Agee’s influence in its more writerly moments, the film came off a little heavy-handed and blatant. It reduced what could have been a sophisticated if unsettling story into a trite morality tale...

Welcome to My Study: Halloween Edition
You’re always welcome to enjoy the things that I’ve found. This weekend’s Halloween Movie Marathon [late post]: 1. Repulsion One detail made this film great: the skinned rabbit rotting on a plate in the salon. Like in Rosemary’s Baby (probably my favorite scary movie), it’s subtle but it creeps you out long term.  But unfortunately there are more differences...

Welcome to My Study
You’re always welcome to enjoy the things that I’ve found. Here are some things I’ve enjoyed lately: After watching SO MANY stupid movies, I’ve decided to take control of my movie-watching again. I’m not trying to be a snob about it - I just don’t want to wake up one day and find myself at Ghost Rider II. Which apparently will be a real thing soon. So I took...

Miscellaneous Reading Notes
It was going to be the year of classic American authors. Hemingway, Twain, Faulkner, Melville. It hasn’t exactly turned out the way I planned, but I still consider it a year of American literature. Here are some notes on some of the books I’ve read this year. 1. The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz I initially thought this book was an exception to the year’s...
